Prior to the 1820s, Bedford St. was known as Barkby Lane.
Shown as The Coopers Arms in deeds for the property. Little is recorded but the house was occupied by Thomas Withers, a cooper, and his wife from the 1860s right through to the 1900s, although in October1870, Thomas Withers had his license refused at the Brewster sessions as he had been convicted of licensing offences three times in the past.
