TUDOR ROSE, 40a BEWCASTLE GROVE

Accessed from Holderness Rd, the Tudor Rose was one of the first theme pubs to be undertaken by Holes brewery. A new concept at the time, as with Holes other ‘themes’ they were on the outskirts of the city, mostly on new housing estates –  this one on the Mowmacre estate.

Opened 20th of January 1959, with licence from the Plumbers Arms and Windsor Castle.

A boarded up Tudor Rose, after closure in the 1980s –  the pub became the victim of vandalism and was finally set on fire, before in 1993 an initiative was put in place by the City Council to transform the building into a community centre.

The Tudor Rose, which in its early years was a thriving and successful pub, was to go the same way as many estate locals in the 1970s and 1980s, ending up neglected and an eyesore.

Originally a James Hole pub. Holes was bought by Courage 1967, Courage also bought John Smiths 1970, The Tudor Rose came under the John Smiths banner
