Photo above:  View looking down Carrington Street, the Unicorn is at the bottom on the left, with the bow window. Sharps the builders’ board can be seen facing.

Corner of Carrington and East Short Street, mentioned in deed of 1843.

Abel Samuels was in occupation, 1850.  The Brewers Protection Society met here of which Abel was secretary.  In 1850, Abel was licensee when the Unicorn was up for sale complete with stocking makers shop. It seems Joseph Hardy followed as his wife Elizabeth is recorded as dying here aged 35 in 1855, followed circa 1862 by Elizabeth Dickinson, who saw the beer house and stocking shop sold in 1870.

Circa 1876, George Birch let the two large shops and sold the premises in 1884. The magistrates records show the later licensees as: 1891, Joseph Lee. 1902, Nathan White. 1904, George Spiers. 1905, William Marshall, and 1911 Fred Ward.

The licence on the Unicorn was surrendered for a new offie on Harrison road. The pub closed on the 5th of April  1914.

The building standing empty after being compulsory purchased by the council in 1957, the Welch Brothers Mild and Strong Ales sign being still visible.
