On the 28th of August 1869, a newspaper reported that Thomas Smith had his licence refused, due to the police and neighbours reports that the Barley Sheaf was very disorderly It was alleged that it was frequented by bad characters, dog fighters and pugilists. The police had great difficulty in gaining entrance.
Later that year, in November 1869, the Barley Sheaf F&F was put up for auction. Two weeks later the whole property held at the Auction Mart in Market Street.
There is no known mention of the Barley Sheaf after that date. By the 1880s, no. 13 was a pawnbroker. Also listed here is John Flewitt, who was brewer at the adjoining Brunswick Brewery.
