Photo above: The only known picture of Cobden Street, a short time prior to the compulsory purchase of properties.
Deeds suggest it was built circa 1866. It seems the Cobden Arms held a full licence for a very short time (if at all), as most records list as an off licence.
John Thomas Underwood lived and ran his shop there in 1883. Recorded as a beer retailer and shop keeper, he was still here in 1890. Mr and Mrs Banton in were there by 1898, still as a beer retailer. In 1922, Mrs. Amelia Miller listed as a shopkeeper.
Cobden Street was one of the longer Leicester streets, running from Humberstone Gate through to the Willow Brook.
The building was compulsory purchased for the St. Matthews development in 1962. (CJ)
There’s another photo of Cobden St (numbers 110-118) taken by Dennis Calow prior to demolition; it’s on the “Vanished Leicester”website run by Leicester Uni.
Thanks Chris, I had missed that one.
