JOLLY MILLER, 44 CONDUIT STREET

Sarah Barsby was landlady as early as in 1833, she was fined 40/- for selling beer after time in November.  Sarah and her husband, William, were at the Jolly Miller for twenty years or more, being listed as victuallers in the 1846 directory.

Alterations were completed in 1895.  Owned by Wilson Allaway & Co Ltd, Burton Brewery Ashbourne and acquired by Bindley & Co of Burton in1897, then Ind Coope in 1914. (Although listed as a Beeston Brewery tied house at some point by BHS)

A beer house only until the 5th of April 1933, when it gained a wine licence and only received its full licence on the 31st of March 1954.

Sold off circa 1995 and closed and demolished circa 2012.

  1. I worked at The Hind (opposite London Road Station, Leicester) for a short time, but The Jolly Miller was my local on nights off. Run by a Scots couple and two daughters. Names escape me, but please post here if you remember.

  2. In the 70s and 80s, I was a regular on Tuesday and Thursday nights. It had a friendly, laid back atmosphere and I had some great nights there with Terry, Dave and George.
    Lock-ins we’re the order of the day, and we would regularly leave at 2 or 3am.
