BIRD IN HAND – OLD BIRD IN HAND, 33 CUMBERLAND STREET/ELBOW LANE

Stood on the corner of Cumberland Street and Elbow Lane.

On 1853, Mr Bradley is listed as victualler, when an Auxiliary Conservative Society was formed at the Bird in Hand on the 13th of February.

Owned by the Trinity Hospital.

On 1862, ‘Under and by Virtue of Distress of Rent warrant’ by a W. Messinger, the Bird in Hand, 15 Cumberland Street, the whole of the Public House, F & F, Machinery employed in the factory, including ‘excellent 101 pipe Dolly m/c’ plus ‘eight scarf looms etc.’, was seized and auctioned.

JR has Harry Griffiths as victualler in 1862, followed by James Bevans.

Again in 1873, the property was auctioned as a beerhouse known as the Bird in Hand with 3 workshops & out offices being at no. 15 Cumberland Street in the occupation of James Bevans.

This causes some confusion as later directories list the Shah of Persia beer house at no. 15, but they were two different pubs.

Charles Hancock seemed to take over after the auction, followed by John Clowes circa 1876, William York, circa 1878 to Thomas Ross 1879, Salina Barnes circa 1888, Michael Chamberlain 1890 and Joseph Withers 1892.

On the 3rd of September 1892, the renewal of the licence was opposed by the temperance society on the grounds that there were four other beerhouses in the vicinity and the Bird in Hand was in a dilapidated condition, unfit for purpose.  The adjoining houses had already been pulled down because of their state, leaving the beer house having to be propped up. There was laughter in the court when the applicant was asked ‘Do you think the roof will stay on?’ to which he replied, ‘No.’  The magistrates refused to grant a renewal.
