LORD DENMAN, 53 DENMAN STREET

A ‘to let’ advert in the Leicester Chronicle of 3 October 1840 featured ‘A Lord Denman to let with Piggeries.’ Ingoing of £150.

Henry Stephenson kept it in 1879 and Thomas Coles from 1881.  In 1883, he was listed as Thomas Abraham Coles, greengrocer and beerhouse.  By 1890, Edward Felstead held the licence but was listed as beer retailer and shopkeeper.

The Lord Denman licence was relinquished prior to World War I.

This beerhouse come shop was a couple of doors away from the Talbot, with an entrance to the rear yard – presumably where the piggeries were.  This could be the same as the Stocking, listed in 1831.

Lord Denman, originally no. 53 Denman Street. The Talbot is no. 59 Denman Street.

To the left of the photo was an alleyway that led to a large back yard where the piggeries were. The building itself survived until the slum clearance began in 1959.
