In 1860, this was kept by James Rainbow, after he had been licensee of the Barkby Arms in Upper George Street. A dispute arose over the F&F after Charles Crowdell bought the Barkby Arms. Crowdell counter accused Rainbow of smearing the walls with tar and claimed £15. The court found in Crowdell’s favour but only awarded him 15/-.
In 1861, James Rainbow was involved in another dispute over brewing vessels he hadn’t paid for, and later that year a burglary occurred at the Old England when Rainbow found the empty till in the garden.
In 1862, the Rainbows were again in court for short changing someone. Mrs. Rainbow had given change for a 1/- instead of a sovereign. The following year James Rainbow was back in court for selling liquor after hours and fined 10/-.
After an eventful four years James Rainbow moved to the nearby Stag & Hounds, Providence Place.
