STOCKING, DENMAN STREET

A reference is made to a pub called the Stocking in a directory of 1831.  A Stocking Yard was next to the Talbot (it had yards either side of it), and the building next to the Talbot ended up as a shop so it is conjecture as to whether the Stocking was an early name for the Talbot or became shop next door.  It might even have been an earlier incarnation of the Lord Denman (although their yard had piggeries).

1836 Samuel Haddon (there was a Samuel Haddon landlord of the Talbot at the time) was accused of assault outside the Cap & Stocking, no proof it referred to the Stocking in Denman St.

This photograph shows the building next to the Talbot as much earlier – fitting in with the 1831 date.  Later locals sill called the entry ‘The Stocking’ right up to its demolition.  It went through to Brook Street, coming out next to Bill (‘Pearly King’) White’s shop.
