Despite its number, this stood next door to the Blue Lion.
The two hanging lamps are etched with the Carlton Hotel name, next door can be seen the Blue Lion on the portico (photo above).
The Carlton was ‘beer only’ until 1873 when it applied for a spirit licence.
The Carlton was to fall under the same scheme as the Blue Lion and was also demolished to make way for the Grand Hotel. Alexanda Angus with his wife being the last licensees.
May also been known as the Paget Hotel for a period. which suggests Thomas Paget hotel keeper of Blue Lion next door had some kind of hand in it.
