LAST PLANTAGENET, 107 GRANBY STREET

The Last Plantagenet stands on the corner with Dover Street. It is the first JD Wetherspoon pub in Leicester, at least some care went into the name via Leicester’s association with Richard III.

Housed in an old Art Deco furniture store, Maples, the Last Plantagenet opened in June 1996.

It had a typical Wetherspoon’s makeover –  ‘pack ‘em in and sell it cheap’.

It certainly was successful for a while.

Little would Wetherspoons know that King Richard III’s body would be found in Leicester 2013, giving a new impetuous to his story.

Wetherspoons took advantage by upping their signage to reflect this historic find. All credit must go to them.

The Last Plantagenet closed in September 2019.

The Last Plantagenet threatened to open again on a few occasions when different Breweries were interested, nothing seemed to materialize on this front , the building was eventually boarded and covered up and in late 2022 work began on proposed refurb into students accommodation.
The proposed new student accommodation block unclear if ground floor to be hospitality at time of writing..
