QUEEN OF BRADGATE, 93 – 97 HIGH STREET

Opened in 1999, in a disused furniture warehouse but lasted only a decade. Put up for sale in 2010. It had become part of the ‘cheap booze’ bars trying to compete with nearby Weatherspoon’s, only to fail as with many others.

An amusing and unusual story involving the Queen of Bradgate occurred in December 2006, when Nickie Jex held up Ladbrook’s betting shop with a rampant rabbit vibrator.  He robbed them of £600 but was caught on CCTV camera and traced to the Queen of Bradgate, where he splashed the cash by buying drinks for the customers. Jex was sentenced to five years in jail.

The Queen of Bradgate re-opened after being closed for a couple of years. It was bought by Matt Saunders, founder of the Fat Cat chain of bars, bringing his experience to try and turn around its previous reputation.

2014 saw a new look, a more contemporary bar serving food as well as a choice of half a dozen real ales.  There was outside seating area to the front, complementing the Café Bruxelles and Cookie bars opposite, enhancing the High Street.
