HORSEFAIR- CASPERS – MISSION – SIMPKINS – GHOST, 4 HORSEFAIR STREET

Photo above: 1970s Horsefair Disco pub. Notice the fashion for ‘flares’?

Popular dance club/bar during the 1970’s -80’s called the Horsefair in the ornate building corner of Horsefair St/Market place

Inside the Horsefair (Molly Storer collection)

Named Caspers in the 1980s and became Simkins, the official address is misleading as the only entrance is now in Market Street. To be fair it’s a moot point to include in pub’s directory. –

1993 The Mission.
1995 Simkins, named after the classic food store that stood in
Horsefair Street, Simkin & James.

Worth a look at Simkin & James, 1970. I can still smell the ham and cheeses, not as though we shopped from there – couldn’t afford to.

So established was this high class food & wine retailer, the ultimate employ was to gain a job at one of their shops (turned out not to be), so established were they, that my mother would say get a job at Simkin & James, and you will be there for life. A manager for every counter, either in white or brown overalls. “How can I help sir/madam today?” Fond memories of a bygone age.

Ghost, 2014.

At the time of writing now called Waikiki nightclub

  1. I worked at Caspers from 1984 to 1986. Behind the bottom bar serving drinks and cocktails with a great bunch of colleagues – Sue Porter and various male colleagues (forgotten their names) but was all good fun and great camaraderie between us. Vincent was the owner. Met my now ex husband there lol 😆

    1. Thanks Susan, many people I speak to have fond memories of the Horsefair, Caspers etc, and of Vincent, not strictly speaking a pub, as some have pointed out, but it had a license and originally you could gain entrance without paying. So we included it, Thanks again it all helps the project.
