EAST END TAVERN, MORLEDGE STREET

East End Tavern, Morledge Street, off Humberstone Gate, near the now Curve.

Presumably an 1860s beerhouse.  First known record was of a beerhouse keepers’ meeting in October 1866, at Mr Kirby’s East End Tavern, Morledge Street.

John Hutchinson, the owner of the property, died in 1869, and the East End Tavern was sold at auction together with other property that he owned. Mr Keites purchased the beerhouse for £550.  The landlady at the time was a Mary Ann Lewin. She herself died in 1874 and Mary’s executers passed on the licence to Sarah Knight.

Sarah by all accounts ran a good pub, free from any adverse publicity, although she was on one occasion charged with allowing gaming on the premises.  This came about as the men playing whist were in the habit of loser buys the beer. Sarah admitted in court that this had always gone on as she was unaware of breaking the law by allowing it. Due to her previous good reputation in running the pub and her honesty, the bench gave her a caution, but not to let it happen again as it was deemed gaming by law.  In 1889, the stabling attached to the pub (accommodating seven horses), was put up to let by the owners Brewers Bates Son & Bishell of Northampton Street. They amalgamated with LBM, who transferred the licence in 1904 to an offie in Devana Road.
