Owned by the nearby Leicester Gas Co. and operating as early as 1827, as the local newspapers advertised auctions from the pub.
In 1868, John Bleasdale took on as victualler from Sam Coleman. Bleasdale was also a builder and joiner but he was soon in trouble with the authorities: he was cautioned and promised to keep his house properly. John died at the Marquis three or four years later, leaving wife Henrietta. The licence transferred to her in June 1872, until 1893 when the it lapsed and was not reapplied for.
