Early references give the Navigation Inn on Public Wharf Belgrave Gate, later Navigation Street. Recorded circa 1825, no mention after circa 1860s.
The Public Wharf /Belgrave Gate came in to prominence some time after 1791, when the industrialisation of the area gained momentum. The Gas Works were built circa 1821, as can be seen on the map heavy industry including foundry’s dominated the area. Wharf Street was to connect the Wharf area through to Humberstone Gate.
In October 1825, William Garner, victualler of Navigation Inn, Public Wharf, advertised for an apprentice aged about thirteen to train as a baker.
One record states that the Navigation stood next to the Star Inn on the Public Wharf. The Star or Blazing Star fronted into Foundry Lane.
JR gives a list of licensees up to circa 1856.
