NORTH BRITON, NORTHGATE

1822 directory records a North Briton in Northgate.

We would expect many beerhouses Inns & Taverns recorded in Northgate as it was one of the main entrances into Leicester.  The propensity for name changes has always been a problem for research so if in doubt they are recorded individually.

One possible anomaly is in 1835 directory when three inns are listed in North Street. They are the Old Hare, the Tallow Chandlers, and the Bull & Mouth.   This should have read Northgate Street, as there are records of the Old Hare, but little on the Bull & Mouth.  For the Tallow Chandlers, see Frog Island.
