October 1846 is the earliest record of the Railway Wagon – a sale notice of nine dwelling houses in Baker Street also a house ‘by the sign of the Railway Wagon’ in the occupation of Mr Holyoak, in adjoining Peel Street.
1849 Directory lists a Railway Wagon beerhouse Peel Street and George Street. A further sale notice in January 1850, listed the Railway Wagon as occupied by Mrs Barker.
Presumably that was sold as July 1852, the Railway Wagon public house was let by Edwards Brewery & Son Stamford (later Melbourne Brewery), or through William Gurden, brewery agent and auctioneer Rutland Street. The Gurden family was involved in brewing in Leicester at the Newark and Highcross Breweries.
No additional records of the Railway Wagon have yet been found. The George & Dragon in Peel Street seems to start trading the following year 1853, so might be one and the same.
