EARL RUSSELL, 80 RUSSEL STREET

Photo above: Earl Russell (kind permission of Laura Evans – the original was taken by Laura’s grandpa, Tom Bassett).

One of only seven Offilers houses in Leicester, all sadly now closed.

Apart from Earl Russell, there was Blue Moon, Fosse Tavern and the Melville Arms. Bishop Blaise, Warwick Arms and Warwickshire Arms.

January 1866 is the earliest record, when William Brandreth, victualler, was adjudged bankrupt.  His luck worsened when twelve months later a fire broke out in his bedroom.  Water couldn’t be obtained as the tap was frozen, so he doused it with ale (needs must).  Fortunately Brandreth was insured and his bankruptcy was discharged in 1869.

William, then Caroline Smith followed Brandreth.  They were registered as victualler and cow keeper. About a dozen more licensees followed (see JR) until the Earl Russell closed 8th of January 1954, prior to the demolition of the area.
