The 1851 census records shows William Whatten as victualler in the Puzzler, St Nicholas Street, and George Evans, innkeeper in St Nicholas Square. William Tarrent is listed as a beerseller and rag merchant in St Nicholas Street. It is a conjecture if either of these were the Puzzler.
The 1861 census, however, lists Elizabeth Burdon as beerhouse keeper at the Puzzler, 27 St Nicholas Street. Husband, William, was a musical instrument maker.
