OLD BLUE BOAR, 63-67 SOUTHGATE STREET

Prior to the demolition of the Blue Boar in Blue Boar Lane circa 1835 a new Blue Boar was built further up Southgate Street sometime around 1806, sometime called Blue Boar Hotel, sometimes Old Blue Boar.

The first landlord I can find is Wm Harrison c1808. Auctions were held here 1816-19 by My Sutton. We know John Hutchinson followed as victular c1827 as again auctions were held here. Joseph or John Garner held the post 1841, in 1843 Garner was fined £2 for having 14 people drinking and smoking on a Sunday.

1844 John Groves & James Vincent received 6 weeks hard labour for stealing a truss of hay from the Blue Boar. Wm Bagley landlord 1846-54. George Kitchen 1854 also the Kitchen family owned the Blue Boar. Hephzibah Kitchen Georges wife would take over 1855, she was also listed as owner.

Wm Wilton landlord 1862, Wm Faulkes 1869 Wm Wilton Faulkes was fined 1872 for serving drinks on a Sunday.( Wm Wilton licensee 1862, Wm Wilton Faulkes 1869 are these one and the same man ?)

Ellen Faulkes 1875, Frederick Charles Painter followed the same year. A Mr Wheatley for a short period 1879 before Thomas Southam the same year. Henry Windram 1884, Eli Kitchen 1886, the Kitchens still listed as owners.

The pub stood on area of ground which held a large cobbled yard and stables.  victualler, Thomas Southam, was listed as a Hay and Corn dealer circa 1880.  In 1890, Eli Kitchen was listed as an aerated water manufacturer as well as Corn and Hay dealer, Francis Jelly licensee 1890. Alfred Poole 1891.

Henry Nicholson in 1893, was also recorded as a flautist, bandmaster and professor of music, well known in Leicester as a teacher of music as well. He advertised in local press as taken over the licence of the Blue Boar in 1893.

Frank Everitt became landlord at about the time Everards bought the pub c1899.

Harry Oswin 1906, Wm Watts c1910, Katherine Matts 1912, Harry Johnson 1914, Harry Thomas 1916, Herbert Howard 1925, Frank Kigden 1934, Harold Doughty 1940, James Abraham 1946 and Herbert Voss 1957.

The Blue Boar was demolished 1971.
