CAT, SOUTHGATE STREET

A Cat is recorded in the 1744 Recognizance Orders, and also a Cat Spinning Time in 1741.

The only clue to its whereabouts is in a deed of 1823 when four properties were built on the site of the old Cat on the corner of Southgate Street and Friar Lane.

This 1950s photo of the (now gone) site where, according to the 1823 deeds, the old Cat stood.  Notice the Phipps/NBC Star hanging outside the Offie.

  1. My Grandmother had a shop on the corner of Friar Lane & Southgate Street which was I believe a beer off licence she left around 1942

    1. Alan yes an off licence stood on corner of Southgate st/Friar Lane for over 100 years, but I am yet to tie it in as an old beerhouse, needs more research, but thanks for your interest and comment.
