In April 1836, a sergeant was called when two young ‘pugilists’ were causing a disturbance in the Spotted Leopard by assaulting a policeman who came to intervene. When the sergeant arrived they had the policeman by the collar whilst a terrier dog was biting his heels and leg. Robert Burton the more forceful was fined 10/- and costs or fourteen days, Edward Brooks 5/- and costs or seven days.
