Mr Garner ran a beer shop in Braunstone Gate. In May 1836, Elizabeth Garrett, a lady travelling through Leicester, was remanded after she stole a smoothing iron from the Joiners Arms. She was soon caught and up before the mayor who ordered Garrett to return the iron to Mr Garner. He then surprisingly discharged her and ordered the court to give her one shilling to help her on her way to Bradford.
