PIED BULL, NORTHGATE STREET

Four references to a Pied Bull in Northgate. From LC and LJ

April 1832, at the Pied Bull, house of Mr Gillespie, sale of tenements in Northgate and Frog Island, owned by Mr Gillespie, lately Mr Ludlam.

9th June 1838 Auction of that old Public House called the Pied Bull Northgate St, complete with brewhouse, stables and large yard.

October 1840, Joseph Collinson (commercial traveller) of Pied Bull, Northgate, applied for and granted a loan from the Sir Thomas White fund.

January 1843 – To be sold by auction on 17th Jan 1843, at the Pied Bull, Northgate Street, a valuable lot of frames from 15-32 gauge the property of the late Mr George Billings.

The actual position on Northgate Street of the Pied Bull is unknown, I  assumed that the pub came about during or just after the 1830 beer act, although the auction in 1838 calls the Pied Bull an Old Public House which is either an exaggeration or indeed is much older.

We can not find any reference to the Pied Bull Northgate Street, after 1843, if it changed its name or befell demolition that took place in 1845 in Northgate.
