Opened 27 August 1939, licence transferred from Old Mitre, Lower Redcross St. Originally to be called The Thomas Wolsey, but the licensing authorities objected when the licence was applied for. The Chairman of the licensing committee suggested the pub be called the Blackbird instead, Everards agreed, so the licence transfer was granted.

Major refurbishment took place in 1990, this photo shows the newly erected balcony, the art deco circular reliefs shown off to good effect.  Most of the interior was auctioned c1995, the revolving entrance doors fetching over £500.
