BELGRAVIA, CHARNWOOD STREET/SPINNEY HILL ROAD

Stood on the corner of Charnwood Street and Spinney Hill Road.

Bought by LBM from Bates & Bishell on the 21st of February 1891. Spanned numbers 30, 32 and 34 Spinney Hill Road.

Landlords included John Popple in 1888.

Councillor Popple was involved in a case with the magistrates in 1900 when he erected a 40 ft. wooden structure to serve his customers whilst work was being carried on in the main pub.  The problem was he didn’t obtain permission, resulting in some locals objecting to the renewal of his licence. The bench took a dim view and rapped Councillors Popple’s knuckles but renewed his licence with conditions.

Ex Leicester Fosse player, Harry Bailey, who kept the Belgravia in the early 1900s was landlord at the Full Moon in Russell Square and the Crown & Anchor Belgrave Gate, where there is more information on him.

Ernest Preston, 1904. Walter Kell, 1909, and Sid Tallis 1923-53.

Landlord Sid Tallis with his wife, Maud, seated third and fourth from right, second row from front.  This party scene out side the Belgravia was celebrating the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935 (Leicester Mercury).

A gym at the rear saw boxer Reggie Meen train there, also Larry Gains visited.

The property was compulsory purchased in 1980.
