This was once the grand home of writer, Edward Phillips Oppenheim, circa 1896 to 1905. It did not become a pub until shortly before World War II, circa 1938.
All Saints Brewery transferred the licence from Horse & Groom opposite on the 18th of June 1938.
Evington, under the Leicester City boundary since 1935, was a separate village and thus not considered in the city until then. Apart from the Cedars – which is still trading after the boundary change – the other pubs (notably the Bear & Ragged Staff, the Horse & Jockey, Kecks Arms and Horse & Groom), all recorded in Evington, will remain part of Evington’s history and not included in this work.
