LIVELY LADY – LESTERS, ETHEL ROAD

The Lively Lady was built in 1970, and named after the round the world yachtsman, Alec Rose’s boat.  It was built out of town, not far from the Leicester General Hospital.

Sir Alec Rose formally opened the pub, the remains of the token mast still visible in this 1988 photo.

Later, circa 1990, the pub changed its name to Lesters, but that only lasted just over a decade . Phil Johnson informs us the building still stands empty as of July 2020.

2023 (from Jeremy Corbett collection) building stands almost empty, frame of signpost still visible.

  1. The article is inaccurate, in that it claims that the pub was closed to make way for a new shopping centre. The shops on Ethel Road have been there since the early 1970s, Lesters pub closed due to lack of custom around 2005, and has stood empty since.

  2. thanks for your input Cam, that was also pointed out in comment 1 by Phil Johnson

    1. Thank you Barry, I don’t believe that Phil Johnson highlighted that the pub wasn’t closed to make way for a shopping centre, which I notice has now been amended. I’m glad that the post is now updated, and accurate.
