GREAT NORTHERN CROSSING, FOREST ROAD

The Great Northern Crossing is mentioned in deeds relating to the sale of an off beer wine & spirit licence on the 20th of February 1902 ‘from Mary Stone to LBM Brewery formally known as the Great Northern Crossing.’

Incidentally, the Forest Road level crossing was in the subject of a fatal accident in March 1884, when two small children aged about four to five climbed over the closed gate just prior to a fast train coming. Joseph Eastern, 28, a shoe riveter saw this and heroically shouted and went after the children only to be hit himself by the train, his head decapitated. The inquest was held at the nearby Martin Inn.
