SIR CHARLES NAPIER – THE NAPIER, 46 GLENFIELD ROAD

Built circa 1938, on the corner of Glenfield and Bolton Road.  It took the name and licence from the Sir or Admiral Charles Napier in Causeway Lane when it closed.

After briefly flirting with the name the Napier, it stuck to its old name as the Sir Charles Napier and unusually still has a three-roomed pub, with most of the original features intact.

Chris Pyrah points out that the earlier Admiral Charles Napier was named after naval hero Sir Charles John Napier (1786-1860), today’s Sir Charles Napier is named after Sir Charles James Napier, soldier, (1782-1853) so the sign would have depicted a different man.

This classic interior shot, I guess the original fitting in the lounge, kindly forwarded by Mark Shirley is I believe worthy of National Inventory.

2024 Sir Charles Napier underwent a refurbishment. (photo by Erica Button, facebook) pleasing to know the pub has survived in these uncertain times, sadly it appears that the Art Deco interior is no more.

Sir Charles Napier was a James Hole of Newark house until acquired by Courage Barclay & Simonds in 1967.
