ST LEDGER TAVERN, LORD STREET

Situated on Lord Street, off Eldon Street, where Lee Street Circle is now.  Lord Street contained only a few houses, early records record the beerhouse as the Ledger Tavern, but from 1880 it was always referred to as the St Ledger Tavern.

In 1863, William Smith, a lodger at the Ledger, stole a razor from a militiaman who was billeted at the beerhouse.  Smith left town but was caught in Loughborough with the razor still on him.  This misdemeanour cost Smith two month’s hard labour.

The Ledger was put up for auction in 1885, Henry Lee in occupation.

It became a LBM House Arthur Davison licensee c1899, Henry Burgess 1901 although Wrights directories sometime show in 1900 Charles Dawson as licensee.

License surrendered and closed 5th April 1906 for exchange for a beer off in Danvers Rd
