Piggot’s Directory of 1822 lists Northgate Street, Horse & Jockey.
Auctioned in 1843, again in 1868, owned by James Coulson 1874 and then Midland Railway Co Loughborough, c1894. before transferring to Loughborough’s Midland Brewery (who were acquired by Stettons of Derby c1902).
c1827 Thomas Thompson was licensee. followed by Amy Thompson c1848.
An inquest held at the Horse & Jockey in March 1829 taken from the Leicester Chronicle describes the unfortunate death of a small boy.
In 1830, the Horse & Jockey celebrated the annual St Crispin’s Feast for the Journeymen Boot & Shoe makers.
1864 William Gregory was licensee. James Coulson bought the Horse & Jockey and took on the licence 1874. John James Cooper Scott became landlord 1876. The Horse and Jockey survived when most of the buildings on this side close to the new bridge were demolished. Closed as a pub in January 1956. Compensation paid. March 1954 The pub was referred to the Compensation board siting that the Horse & Jockey had over 28 licensees in its recent history, which was reason enough to warrant closure, although admitting present landlord Ernest Voce was making an effort to turn things around and Stettons Brewery had promised to smarten the pub up.
