BULLS HEAD, 13 OXFORD STREET

Oxford Street was previously known as Horsepool.

Bulls Head, Oxford Street behind the trees.

JR has William Haddon as victualler in 1815. The Bulls Head is listed in Pigot’s 1818 directory, with Jonathan Biggs as victualler. Biggs was there until 1845 when the licence passed to Thomas Sarson.  During Jonathan Biggs time auctions were held here.  One in December 1841, was of a public house by the sign of the Lancer in Swan Lane near the Newark, in the occupation of George Orange at a rent of £96.

Like Biggs, Thomas Sarson held the licence for twenty years or more. Thomas’ wife Susanna died here in 1863 aged sixty three. Thomas Wade followed a few years later.

JR has Amos Wall from 1869-1873.  George Lawrence followed in 1873 and disposed of the brewing plant in July.  This included a 100 gallom boiler, twenty-eight gallon copper, hop press and sixteen ‘sweet & well seasoned barrels.’ The licence was transferred as well.

In May 1877, the Bulls Head was put up for sale, complete with brew house skittle alley, stabling, loft, garden and out buildings.  Listed as being in the occupation of Anne Bent, internally there was a bar, tap room, bagatelle room, five beds, good cellars, kitchen and scullery.  The tenement, no. 15 Oxford Street, adjoining with two story workshop behind was also included in sale.  The property was described as having ‘extensive frontage.’

Circa 1879, George Payne was victualler. February 1888, John Matthews to William Wright.  Circa 1892, Richard Tomkins, circa 1895 Eli Shuttlewood.

In April 1913, the Bulls Head was one of six pubs to be closed under the compensation scheme at the Leicester magistrates.  John Baldwin seemed to be the last licensee.
