Purchased by LBM from Orson Wright in May 1900, with land, and a tenement formally known as the Uppingham Road Hotel.
Emma Maria Martin, wife of landlord, William Henry Martin, with six of her children. Back row is left to right, unknown, Elsie Martin (who was to become landlady of the Queens, Rutland Street), Hilda Margaret Martin (who married Arthur Atherton of the Beehive pub in Nottingham). The young boy on Emma Maria’s knee is Archibald Roland Martin (he became landlord of the Richard III in Highcross Sreett). One of the girls, extreme right, is Winifred Lillian May Martin – the grandmother of Linda Elson who kindly sent in the photo. Love to know the story of why three of them are holding buckets.

Photo above – taken shortly before the Uppingham closed in 1996. Like many others, falling victim to social change. For a couple of years after the pub closed, the upstairs was continued to be used as a boxing gym.
(Leicester Mercury July 1998)
In 1998, the building was bought by the Mandir Baba Balak Math, an organisation for the conversion to a Hindu temple. A saving grace was that the building did at least survive. The boxing club was forced to look elsewhere for facilities to accommodate them
