The only known reference is March 1835, when a tremendous storm hit parts of the town, particularly affecting Welford Road. The LJ reported that the John Bull beerhouse was flooded several feet deep in the cellar. It also forced down a wall 15-20 yards long.
An April 1836, amendment to the law stipulated that no licence shall be granted to any house paying less than £10 per annum rent. This meant the closure of many road side beer houses.
