BOOT, BELGRAVE GATE

Joseph Mowsley, of the Boot beerhouse, Belgrave Gate, was charged by Moses Pegg for being open after 10pm. Mowsley failed to turn up in court, so Constable Summer was sent to enforce the service of the summons.  The constable returned, saying that Mowsley had treated the message with indifference and was advised by his wife not to attend as they were selling all their goods. In his absence Mowsley was fined 40/- and costs. Pegg then asked if he could claim the defendant’s bond but was told his only remedy was against the goods. Just before the business of the court was at an end Mowsley arrived – but was told he was too late.
