CROWN & BARREL, BELGRAVE GATE

There are a few newspaper references to a Crown & Barrel in Belgrave Gate.  At first I thought that the newspaper reports meant the Crown & Magpie, (as they could often be wrong) but as there are a few reports and the victulars names differ from Crown & Magpie it must have been a separate pub.  There is no indication as yet of actual address in Belgrave Gate.

A court case in October 1837 reports that a Mrs Lewis of the Crown & Barrel had the pub open after midnight.  On promising not to offend again she was let off with a caution.

July 1840, William Fewkes – a well known character was charged with stealing 17/- from the pocket of a railway labourer who was asleep in the Crown & Barrel.

August 1842, Nathaniel Roberts was charged with assaulting Ann Jones of the Crown & Barrel.
