BLACK HORSE, 191 BELGRAVE GATE

The first recording of the Black Horse is circa1815, William Freer was the landlord. Many auctions were held here.  By 1831, it was run by William Taylor, who was there for some years.  In 1841, he was charged to appear at the exchange, ‘to show cause why he refused to billet two recruits of the 17th foot ( Leicesters).’

By 1862, John Swift had taken over.  In June 1872, two men refused to pay for their ale, after lying down on a settle, resulting in a court case.

In 1876, Charles Flower was licensee, and three years later its brewing plant was put up for sale, eventually bought by Manchester Brewery, who in turn was to sell the Black Horse to Frank Myatt’s West End Brewery, Wolverhampton.  Other licensees included 1881, Walter Webster. 1882, George Sturgess and John Whitwell. 1883, WilliamHarris. 1884, Thomas Slawton. 1885, Pat Hogan. 1888, John Brodach. 1894, Hubert McGower. 1899, William  Wilson. 1901, Michael Horam. 1909, Robert Clay. 1910, Fred Storer and in 1926, John Rosevear. 

The Black Horse closed 11th of March 1930, due to the impending road widening, the F&F was sold off at auction in March 1931 by the Leicester Corporation, the licence transferred to the Telegraph further along Belgrave Gate.
