ROSE – TALBOT – BELL – WHEATSHEAF, CASTLE STREET

Photo above: What this Victorian map can see is both corners of Castle and Southgate Street.  It could be the site of the Rose etc. was part of the of the newly built Southgate Brewery (Everards),  or it might have been one of the properties on the opposite side.

In a deed relating to properties in Castle Street, mention is given to the corner of Castle and Southgate Street covering four premises in Castle Street and two in Southgate Street, circa 1700.

This pub used to be called the Rose, which changed its name to the Talbot, then the Bell, and finally – circa 1750 – the Wheatsheaf.

    1. David, thanks for your comment re your uncle’s shop on Southgate St, if you have a photo and number on Southgate St. I can possibly identify the coaching inn for you, also we can include it in our project.

      Thanks again,
