STAR, CHURCH GATE

Star sometimes recorded as 30 Lower Church Gate, unless there was two pubs of the same name which is doubtful

The Star’s fixture and fittings, together with its brewing vessels, was auctioned off in December 1854.

Edwin and Elizabeth Bagley, or Beagley, ran the Star from the 1850s until 1881, when Charles Scotney became licensee, for a short period by 1883 Samuel Veasey was installed

During the Begaleys (another reported different spelling of their name) Jan 1876 Richard Hollingwoth 74 who helped with the brewing, on entering the tap room collapsed, by the time the doctor had been called the landlord had propped him on a chair, the doctor pronounced him dead. Due to Syncope.

1890 Wm Wright, 1891 David Rudd licensee of the beerhouse 1898 John Knight

Still trading as a beer house under John Knight in 1900, but in April 1913, was ordered to close under the Compensation Act.
