OCTAVIOUS, 2 EARL HOWE STREET

Corner of Earl Howe Street and Gopsall Street.

Also listed as Octavious in the 1890 directory of public houses.

c1877 George Arnold shopkeeper and debt collector applied for a licence to supply beer for consumption off the premises, George died suddenly 1880, his widow Mary Jane taking on the business (Chris Pyrah)

Mary Jane Arnold, was listed as beer retailer and shopkeeper in another directory of same year also from 1881 as a beer retailer and shopkeeper.  In 1891, Arnold was grocer & victualler.

Chris Pyrah points out in the 1891 census Frederick Clayton FWK is living there, a year later 1892-3 he attends an off licence association meeting at the Globe. c1895 Eliza Oakland is in occupation.

In 1900, John Suffolk was beer retailer and shopkeeper. By the end of World War I, the beer retailer part had been dropped.

Obviously an offie – whether it ever held full licence is conjecture.

After further research by Chis Pyrah, he has solved the mystery of the Octavious name from c 1900-1913 the property was occupied by James Octavious Owen a tailor/cutter. Nowhere is he listed as a shopkeeper or beer retailer, as was John Suffolk c1900.

After James Octavious Owen left the property was eventually occupied by William Arthur Pykett who resumed as a shopkeeper (1920 Directory)
