RAILWAY ARMS, 2 EDWARD STREET/FARNHAM STREET

Stood on the south east corner of Edward Street, and south west corner of Farnham Street.  Recorded in 1882 Directory.

Edward Farnham of Quorn sold the land to the Freehold Society for these streets to be built on, hence Edward and Farnham Street.

As was usual many alehouses sprang up when streets of houses were being built to serve the construction workers, frequently on corners of the new streets.  Most did not last as pubs but often evolved into off licences and local shops to serve the new residents.

The Midland Railway ran at the bottom of Edward Street, hence the name.

In 1883, Henry Herbert ran the Railway, by 1890 George Hall had taken over and was now described as a beer retailer and shopkeeper.
