RED LION, 39 GALLOWTREE GATE

The cellars of the Red Lion exposed during excavation work in the 1990s.  This photo taken from the Market side to which the building extended.

The Leicester Journal reported in 1775 that the Red Lion had a very large coal yard measuring 750 sq yards, also stabling for 100 horses. As one of the main thoroughfares in the city Gallowtree Gate housed many of the principal inns of the 17th century, the Red Lion being one of them.
