The Leicester Journal reported in 1775 that the Red Lion had a very large coal yard measuring 750 sq yards, also stabling for 100 horses. As one of the main thoroughfares in the city Gallowtree Gate housed many of the principal inns of the 17th century, the Red Lion being one of them.
1772 The Red Lion would hold a sale of John Carr’s brewing vessels and coppers.
