BOROUGH GAOL, HIGHCROSS STREET

Leicester Gaol or Jail, which stood a few buildings down from the Horse & Trumpet

In 1728, it was granted a licence to sell ale as, like many others, Leicester Gaol permitted a prisoner with money to buy what he liked through the jailor.  For poorer prisoners near starvation could follow imprisonment. All that remains today (as of January 2014), is end brickwork still visible in Highcross Street.

All that is left of the Old Borough Gaol.
