Bought by Everards, circa 1908.  Extended many times over the years to become a a hotel in the 1980s and later a Travel Lodge built adjacent.

During the 1920s and 1930s, a giant whale bone stood outside, supposedly reaching 10ft at the apex.

Not until 1924 was the Red Cow granted a full licence after alterations, opposition was mounted against the licence. The Magistrates bench was challenged over the Labour Councillors refusal to grant a licence. Headlines ran “TOWN HALL STORMED OVERFLOWING INTO JURY BOX, 6500 PEOPLE WITH NO INN. The bench overturned the previous resolution when brewer Everards offered £1000 to the compensation fund characterized as a ‘bribe’ by some members of the committee Everards then offered to transfer the licence of the Black Horse Granby St, also to surrender the licence of the Midland Arms Hotel and an off licence 102 Shenton St. Although the later two were not enforced.
