SPINNEY HILL TAVERN – SPINNEY HILL HOTEL, UPPER KENT STREET/MAIDSTONE ROAD

Mentioned in 1865, when William Hanley was licensee at the Spinney Hill Tavern.

1970 George Collis became owner and licensee. followed by Lydia Ada Collis in 1882

In 1872, the licensee was fined for being open after hours. 

In September 1884, the RSPCA summoned Arthur Read for ill treatment of animals by urging two dogs to fight in the Spinney Hill Tavern. John Wm Symmington was only landlord since August that year.

Some time after 1885 the pub became the Spinney Hill Hotel, as in October 1890 a wanted ad was in the LJ: 

Wanted, a general servant, good home, one from the country preferred, apply Spinney Hill Hotel.

Brunt & Co Brewers became the owners.

Joseph Ward licensee 1899, Emily Ward 1907 after Joseph died. another Joseph, Joseph Wm Brooks became licensee in 1916, Stanley Manger? 1921, Alfred Colclough 1923, Wm East 1927, Sam Strawson 1928, George Henry Mathew 1930 -the past few licensee names were very difficult to read in the licensing register- Albert Hawker 1938 (the son of the ‘Victorian Poacher’ James Hawker) became landlord before moving to among other The British Arms.

Thomas Salt Brewery Maltings, Burton. Taken over by Bass 1927. Steamin’ Billy brewed there for a time in 2010, under John Mills Tower Brewery.
