LIZARD LOUNGE – ORIGINAL FOUR – SUPER FLY – XY – BUDDHA BAY, THAT’S AMORE. 2 KING STREET/WELLINGTON STREET

This iconic building was only built circa 1930.  Originally insurance offices, later retail use, including a book shop.  In December 1980, became Leicester City Council’s private staff social club.

Whilst Steamin Billy Brewing Co ran the Vaults next door in the mid 1990s I used to sneak in sometimes.  It often crossed my mind to move the Vaults into this wonderful building, but as it had a licence for members only, I dismissed the concept. I should have tried harder.

Circa1 997 became Lizard Lounge followed by Original Four – still partly members only.

As the council would only allow limited signage in early in 2001, they started proceedings against the management for erecting two non illuminated banners on the side of the building.

Changed its name to Superfly, circa 2008, and again to XY a few years later.

The building gives the appearance of a ‘Gentleman’s Club’ but is mainly a dance and party nights venue. Closed to reopen circa 2019 as Buddha Bay.

Another change by 2021 to Thats Amore Italian Bar & Restaurant
