COOPERS ARMS, 2 LARCH STREET/ASH STREET

A beerhouse that stood on a corner of Larch Street/Ash Street and recorded at different times as either place. Ash Street ran off Humberstone Road and Larch Street first Cross road off.

The licence in 1880 was with John Johnson, Charlotte Johnson listed 1883, William Adams followed, he transferred the licence to Francis Lee of Preston Feb 1886..  3 months later passed licence to Miss S. Broughton in May 1886.  She couldn’t have been there long either as at the Brewster Sessions of November 1887 listed William Marlow as the landlord then transferring the licence to William Ecclestone. by 1890 John Freeman was installed, by 1893 Messiah Medhurst .

Messiah Medhurst for many years a needle maker was like most of the other licensees only at the Coopers for a short time, after leaving he reverted back to needle making and can be found lodging in Balfour St aged 42 listed as a needle maker.

In little over 10 years at least nine people would hold the licence.

March 1893, saw the Coopers up for auction, advertised now mainly as an off licence and grocers:

Old established known as the Coopers Arms in Ash Street with frontage in Larch St in occupation of Messiah Medhurst with out door beer licence doing good trade, double frontage shop, dry cellars and private yard.
